Q4 2019 Insights from U.S. Bank

The U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index indicates that both shipments and spend fell sequentially and on a year-over-year basis to conclude 2019. The tough quarter was due to weaker economic activity and difficult comparisons from a strong fourth quarter in 2018. The data reflects that at least parts of the economy, like manufacturing activity, are currently under pressure. Although 2019 overall was a tough year for motor carriers, spending was up slightly from 2018, which is remarkable considering that volumes were off significantly.
